Expanded Drawing

Artist Statement

My work is rooted in recollections from childhood of a calm state of play. My grandmother's love of wildflowers stayed with me, and as an adult I find that same calm outside, looking at the endless variety of plants.

Some of the materials I use are collected from scrap stores, or DIY shops. Offcuts from products and packaging that would have likely ended up in our homes. I'm interested in my relationship with materials, I work into them by hand. I collect plants and press them.

Juxtaposing materials forms a hazy narrative – each arrangement leading to the next. Like a patchwork quilt, the drawing is made of smaller elements that build up over time. Often I choose materials that are light and translucent. The space of the room around the objects is also a material, the drawing uses it and responds to it.

Morris Castelli's notion of anti-form art work, considerations of gravity and collapse, Eva Hesse and her explorations of materiality and spontaneity inform my pieces. Cy Twombly's marks, Ian Kiaer's understanding of space and lightness continue to inspire my work.
